How we pick

What earns a device a place here

Every product in the catalogue is assessed the same way. This page sets out that process in full, including what it cannot tell you, so you can judge how much weight to give it.

We do not physically test these devices

This is the first thing you should know, and we put it at the top rather than in a footnote. Quiet Drawer conducts documentary evaluation: we read, compare and verify published information. We do not currently have hands-on samples, so we do not report on sensation, comfort, perceived intensity, real-world battery life or fit.

Plenty of sites imply hands-on testing they have not done. We would rather tell you the method is documentary and let you weigh it accordingly. If that changes, this page changes first and every affected review is updated to say so.

What we read

Manufacturer documentation

Official product pages, manuals and support articles. This is where stated specifications come from, and we attribute them as manufacturer claims rather than as measured findings.

App privacy policies and terms

For any connected device we read the app's privacy policy and terms, looking at what is collected, what is retained from remote sessions, who receives data and how deletion works.

Warranty and support terms

Length, coverage, what voids it and how a claim is actually made. On premium devices this is a material part of what is being paid for.

Materials and care guidance

Stated material composition, water resistance rating and the manufacturer's own cleaning instructions, because these determine whether the device can be maintained properly.

The public record

Independent teardowns, long-term reports and documented product histories, including how a manufacturer responded to a known problem in a previous generation.

The five criteria

Every review answers the same five questions in the same order. That consistency is the point: it lets two reviews be compared against each other rather than read as separate opinions.

  1. Control model

How the device is operated, how many independent control paths exist, and whether control requires a phone at the moment it matters.

  2. Fit, wearability or ergonomics

What adjustment the design offers. We report the mechanism and its intent, never a promise that it will fit a particular person.

  3. Materials and cleaning

Material composition and water resistance, weighted by how much they affect whether a device gets cleaned properly in practice.

  4. App, account and offline behaviour

What the app requires, what it records, and what the device still does when the app or the servers are unavailable.

  5. Support, warranty and evidence depth

Whether the warranty path is documented and traceable, and how much independent public information exists about the device over time.

Why there are no scores

We do not publish numerical ratings. A score out of ten implies a measurement, and we have not measured anything. Assigning one would make the evaluation look more rigorous than it is, which is the opposite of what this page is for. We publish a qualitative verdict per criterion and a plain statement of who a product suits.

The same reasoning applies to our structured data: we deliberately omit rating markup, so our pages do not display star ratings in search results.

Commercial independence

No manufacturer pays for coverage, reviews our drafts, or influences a verdict. Commission rates play no part in ranking or ordering. Our commercial model does influence which products we cover, since we write about products available through programmes we can join, and we state that openly in our affiliate disclosure.

Corrections

Specifications change and we get things wrong. Every page carries the date it was last updated. If you find an error, write to editorial@quietdrawer.com and we will correct it and update the date. We do not silently edit substantive claims.
